Kilbrittain Nature Walk
On Tuesday the 22nd of May we went for a nature walk. It was so much fun.We were put into groups. I was with Sineád, Cassie, Denis, Neil, Ryan, Brendan and Seán. Our group had to look for birds and study the habitat of the mudflats. We walked through the village to the pitch, through the woods and on to Deasy’s Bridge, and walked on a road called Slí na Sláinte. Our group collected lots of birds’ feathers. We heard lots of birds in the woods. We saw mudflats. The mudflat is a wonderful habitat for birds. They would have lots of food there like fish and worms. We saw heron, ducks and a seagull. We had a picnic too in the woods. We had a lot of fun.

Habitats
Woodlands
Mudflats
The wood is mostly beech trees and sika spruce. It is dry and shaded under the trees. Smaller bushes and trees – rhododendron, alder, friars and furze – grow thickly where the forest has been cleared of large trees. We heard lots of songbirds.
The mudflats are an excellent habitat for birds. There is lots for birds to eat – fish and worms in the mud. There are large tufts of grass in the middle of the mud. This is a very safe place for swans and ducks to build their nests. The ground is salty from the sea. Only a small variety of plants are able to grow here because of the salt.
Riverbank
Hedgerows
The riverbank is a wet shaded area. There are small fish in the water. Others can be seen here as well as ducks and herons. It is a good place for a picnic.
The hedge at both sides of the road is filled with a great variety of flowers and plants. Some trees such as the Hawthorn and Ash grow on the ditch. The hawthorn is a flower.
Some people call it the May blossom.
